Annecy and its surrounding region are famous for their unique and spectacular events. For carnival enthusiasts, the Venetian Carnival of Annecy will take place from March 7 to 9, 2025, in a picturesque setting, close to both the lake and the historic city center with its canals.
In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about this event, which is a signature of the Venice of the Alps, blending colors, costumes, and tradition!
Highlights of the Annecy Carnival
Annecy, with its canals winding through its historic heart, is often called the Venice of the Alps. This reputation is reinforced during the end of winter, when the Venetian Carnival takes place. The event originates from Venice, where locals would disguise themselves and celebrate anonymously behind their masks. This centuries-old tradition has evolved over time, but the atmosphere remains the same: people wear costumes and masks, all in a festive and friendly ambiance. Since 1996, Annecy has adopted this tradition, offering the perfect backdrop with its Venetian-like architecture and canals. Every year, nearly 500 participants come together to bring the magic of the Carnival to tourists and locals.
For its 28th edition, the Annecy Carnival promises a grand event, with several hundred masks parading freely through the streets of the Old Town and gathering at the podium in the Jardins de l’Europe.

While the Carnival runs throughout the weekend (from March 7 to 9), each day offers unmissable events. The Carnival kicks off on Friday evening with a twilight promenade and a luminous parade.
On both Saturday and Sunday, from 10 AM to 6 PM, you can freely stroll through the streets of Annecy, near the lake or in the Jardins de l’Europe, to immerse yourself in the Carnival atmosphere and enjoy various animations.
Additionally, on Saturday and Sunday at 2 PM, the masked participants will present themselves on a sound-equipped podium facing the lake. This is a spectacle you won’t want to miss! Furthermore, conferences and film screenings are often organized in the week leading up to the Carnival.

How to prepare to fully enjoy the Carnival
First of all, it’s important to note that the Annecy Carnival is open and accessible to all, as the event is free. In terms of transportation, you can park your vehicle in a designated parking lot at Quai de la Tournette, reserved for vehicles with mobility-impaired passengers who have a “mobility inclusion” parking card. However, due to the crowds, we recommend parking on the outskirts and walking or taking public transport to the city center.
Also, for accommodation, we recommend booking your stay in advance if you don’t want to risk finding yourself without a place to stay. At Location Lac Annecy, we offer a wide range of accommodations in Annecy and around the lake, catering to all tastes. Take a look!

The best places to admire Venetian costumes
The Annecy Carnival is a festive event where you can admire costumes in every color. However, there are some strategic places in the city that provide the best views of the costumes. The Jardins de l’Europe is a prime spot for this, as it’s the favorite park of the locals. Several parades are planned here depending on the day, and you’ll also get a great view of the surrounding mountains.
Another excellent spot to enjoy the Carnival is by the canals in the Old Town. Follow the streams to discover a variety of Venetian costumes and masks, all in an elegant and mysterious atmosphere.
Lastly, don’t miss the opportunity to go near the lake to see the masks on the podium. To make your experience more comfortable, we recommend bringing snacks, staying hydrated, and choosing your spot in advance, as the crowd tends to gather as the event begins.
